Cedar vs. Fiber Cement Siding

Remodeling costs are equivalent when comparing traditional cedar wood siding installation with the new fiber cement cedar siding from James Hardie & Certainteed !  Fiber cement board siding is a perfect choice when replacing cedar lap or wood panel siding, or when you want to remodel with the beauty and charm of wood, but the strength, safety and durability that only fiber cement board siding can offer.   Customers choose fiber cement siding when they want the look and feel of wood but are tired of painting cedar siding every 5 years or replacing deteriorated cedar lap siding boards.  Fiber cement lap board siding looks just like wood but is much better than traditional cedar lap board siding because it is backed by a 50 year product warranty from failure!  It’s 25 year factory finish paint warranty, available in any color you can imagine, surpasses any paint warranty you can find on cedar siding !   Available in a wide variety of smooth, stucco, and natural cedar wood textures.

Fiber Cement Board Siding features:

  • Factory pre-finishing in a wide range of colors
  • Scratch resistant
  • Resists insect damage
  • Non-Combustible, practically concrete !
  • Resists damage from cold windy weather

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement cedar texture lap board siding offers the appearance of traditional wood based cedar siding materials with much lower maintenance requirements, while maintaining its shape and color much better than wood cedar lap & vinyl siding.   About 12 % to 15 % of all new homes you find in the Cincinnati & Dayton Ohio area are now clad with fiber cement siding.

Several design options, and a full palette of colors, are available with fiber cement board siding.  One option is horizontal cedar lap siding, which includes profiles such as: Dutch, beaded, and traditional. You may want to incorporate architectural elements adding personality to your home. Shaped fiber cement siding is available as shingles, half rounds, octagons, and random squares (with either a straight or staggered edge). Vertical siding options include a traditional stucco appearance, smooth or cedar.   Fiber cement soffits are also available in a cedar texture which can be vented.   Matching low maintenance Mira-tec composite trim materials can complete the architectural remodeler design.

What is fiber cement siding?

James Hardie 's  fiber cement siding is produced from a mixture of cement, sand, and cellulosic fibers.  Manufacturing fiber cement siding utilizes autoclaving, a high temperature steam curing process, to increase strength and dimensional stability.  Cellulosic fibers are added to the mixture to prevent cracking.  Fiber cement siding is manufactured in layers, you will find 3 if manually delaminated, forming a sheet of the desired thickness.  A cedar wood grain is imprinted onto the surface at the time the uncured product is lifted by an accumulator roll and cut into individual sections, a separate high pressure molding process immediately after the fiber cement cedar product is cut.

CertainTeed 's fiber cement siding has an exclusive green building products formula & is made up of a combination of recycled fly ash, Portland cement, wood fiber and specialty additives.  Part of CertainTeed's line of environmentally friendly building products, CertainTeed FiberCement is lighter in weight, lower in density and offers the most authentic-looking cedar grains and textures of any fiber cement siding on the market.   All CertainTeed fiber cement cedar board lap siding features a higher interlaminate bond strength than competing products and a Class 1(A) fire rating, is impervious to wood-boring insects, resists damaging effects of salt spray and ultraviolet UV rays, and will not rot.

What advantages of fiber cement siding can I find?

Fiber cement board lap siding provides a traditional cedar wood grain appearance without the drawbacks associated with cedar wood.  You will find a variety of available textures, profiles, and colors matching your design requirements.  Fiber cement manufacturers offer complete systems for siding, decorative shapes, soffit and trim applications. This remarkable product is manufactured under rigorous factory specifications and guidelines, providing consistent quality and excellent dimensional stability.  It doesn’t warp, buckle, or fade—traits you find in cedar & vinyl siding products—and holds a Class 1 (A) Fire Rating.  Fiber cement board siding will not rot, is capable of withstanding damaging effects of salt spray and ultraviolet rays, and cannot be penetrated by birds or insects.

Once installed, James Hardie & Certainteed fiber cement board lap siding products stand up to bumps and direct impacts, unlike aluminum siding, and doesn’t become brittle in freezing conditions or melt / burn in the presence of heat sources, like barbeque grills, as does vinyl siding & cedar wood siding.  Fiber cement cedar lap siding products can be used in historic preservation areas where other cladding materials are forbidden.  Fiber cement cedar texture lap siding holds paint well, with some factory finishes warrantied to hold paint for up to 25 years.  Transferable product warranties can last as long as 50 years.    Installer must follow all manufacture installation instructions to avoid warranty being voided.
